Part of the gas for the upcoming heating season already en route to the Inčukalns gas storage – LNG carrier “Arctic Aurora” has arrived

The LNG carrier “Arctic Aurora,” chartered by the energy company Elenger, has delivered gas to the Port of Klaipėda. This shipment forms part of the volume designated for the upcoming heating season. The liquefied natural gas (LNG) will be transferred to the floating terminal FSRU Independence, from where it will enter the Lithuanian and Latvian gas transmission system and be transported to the Inčukalns Underground Gas Storage.

The gas was supplied by the Norwegian energy company Equinor. The vessel “Arctic Aurora” was loaded at the Hammerfest LNG terminal on 12 April this year and is currently discharging nearly 1 terawatt-hour (TWh) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the Port of Klaipėda. This corresponds to approximately 12% of Latvia’s total natural gas consumption in 2025.

“The arrival of spring and warmer weather marks the start of preparations for the next heating season. During the spring months, we will deliver most of next year’s gas volumes by ship from Norway and the United States to the Finnish and Baltic region, using both the Port of Inkoo in Finland and the Port of Klaipėda in Lithuania,” said Dāvis Skulte, Chairman of the Management Board of Elenger. “Gas availability is good, and deliveries are proceeding according to plan—sufficient volumes are reaching Europe, and storage injection has begun across all countries.”

As previously reported, Elenger’s first delivery for the upcoming season from the United States arrived at the Port of Inkoo at the end of March aboard the LNG carrier “Marvel Swallow.” The next delivery to Inkoo is scheduled for May. In total, three LNG carriers are expected to arrive at Inkoo and two at Klaipėda during the spring months, with additional deliveries planned for the autumn.

Elenger has been using the small-scale LNG terminal in Klaipėda, Lithuania, since 2017. In 2019, an agreement was concluded with Klaipėdos Nafta, marking the start of LNG procurement and supply into the natural gas network via the floating terminal “Independence.”

Elenger is the largest privately owned energy company in the Baltic States and Finland, with operations spanning the entire energy value chain—from trading and production to delivery to end consumers. The company serves more than 450,000 customers and employs over 1,000 people.

Elenger offers customers natural gas of Western origin and renewable biomethane, and operates gas distribution networks in Estonia, Latvia, and Poland, with a total length of 9,000 kilometres. The company also sells electricity, including green electricity generated at its solar parks, and is actively engaged in international energy trading. Elenger is owned by the investment company Infortar, whose shares are listed on the main list of the Nasdaq Tallinn.
