Elenger Trains Firefighters on Solar Park and BESS Safety
On October 24, Elenger Latvia organized a training session for firefighters at the “Solar Nica” solar power plant in Sērmūkšļi, Nīca Parish, South Kurzeme Region. The training focused on the operational principles of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and the associated safety risks in case of fire.

Elenger izglīto ugunsdzēsējus saules parku un BESS sistēmu drošības jautājumos
The goal of the training was to provide firefighters with practical knowledge on how to identify and safely respond to incidents involving solar power plants and BESS systems — technologies that are becoming increasingly widespread in the renewable energy sector.

Rolands Lūsveris sniedz ieskatu par ilgtspējīgu elektroenerģijas ražošanu
Participants gained valuable insights and hands-on experience in several key topics:
-
Rolands Lūsveris, Head of Renewable Energy Business Development at Elenger Latvia, provided an overview of sustainable electricity generation and Elenger’s approach to renewable resource utilization, emphasizing the company’s role in Latvia’s energy transition towards a greener future.
-
Mārtiņš Petris, CEO of OMS and designer, builder, and operator of the power plant, shared his expertise on planning, designing, constructing, and maintaining solar power facilities, with special attention to safety standards and engineering solutions.
-
Marcos Serrão, representative of Huawei Digital Power, delivered an in-depth presentation on the operational principles, components, and potential fire-related risks of BESS systems. Participants gained valuable knowledge on safety and response measures when working with high-voltage equipment, lithium-ion batteries, and energy storage technologies.
This collaboration between Elenger, Huawei Digital Power, and firefighters from Latvia and Lithuania highlights the importance of strengthening knowledge and safety culture when working with emerging BESS technologies in the renewable energy sector.
The event took place within the framework of the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027 (Project No. LL-00228 “Cooperation among fire guard services in order to strengthen disaster risk prevention and management on the border of Latvia and Lithuania”). It brought together firefighters from South Kurzeme Municipality (Latvia) and Šilutė (Lithuania).
