Elenger invests €1.8 million and commissions renewable energy storage system in Olaine

Elenger, the largest privately owned energy company in the Baltic and Finnish region, has commissioned a battery energy storage system (BESS) at its solar park in Olaine Municipality. The investment totals €1.8 million, and the new BESS is the company’s third energy storage project in Latvia. It will strengthen the stability of the national electricity system, support the efficient use of renewable energy and enable customers to receive green electricity.

“With the commissioning of the energy storage system in Olaine, we are taking another significant step towards a more flexible, secure and sustainable energy system in Latvia, where an increasing amount of renewable electricity is available to households and businesses. The development of renewable energy generation is inconceivable without modern energy storage technologies. Solar and wind power generation depends on weather conditions, which is why BESS solutions are becoming one of the most important elements in ensuring the stability of the electricity system. We have been purposefully developing electricity storage projects in Latvia, as demonstrated by the BESS projects at our solar parks in Liepāja, Nīca and Olaine, in which we have invested a total of €5.8 million,” says Gints Brakovskis, Managing Director and Head of Sales of Elenger Latvia.

Brakovskis emphasises that all electricity consumers benefit from such investments: “Battery energy storage systems make it possible to store electricity when generation exceeds consumption and prices are lower, and to use it when demand rises sharply. This helps balance price fluctuations, reduces pressure on the electricity supply system and strengthens the security of the entire energy system. The more solutions of this kind are introduced in Latvia, the more effectively we will be able to integrate renewable energy and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.”

Following the completion of the new project in Olaine, Elenger’s total renewable electricity storage capacity in Latvia will increase significantly, reaching 27 megawatt-hours (MWh). This amount of energy would be sufficient to supply electricity to approximately 3,300 households for one day or to charge multiple electric vehicles capable of travelling a combined distance of up to 170,000 kilometres. This is equivalent to travelling around the Earth more than four times or making approximately 36 return journeys between Riga and Paris.

Elenger opened its solar power plant in Olaine Municipality in April 2025, having invested €2.4 million in its construction. Since the plant was commissioned, it has generated 5,771 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity—enough to cover the daily electricity consumption of approximately 942,000 households. The solar park covers nine hectares and features 7,056 solar panels. It is now also home to a BESS with a power output of 4.5 megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of 9 megawatt-hours (MWh). With the commissioning of the battery energy storage system, the Olaine solar park has become a modern renewable energy generation and storage complex, enabling the electricity produced there to be used even more efficiently.

The Elenger Group has been developing solar energy generation since 2019, when it opened what was then Estonia’s largest solar park complex in Pärnu together with a partner company. The facility featured 13,000 solar panels with a total capacity of 4.7 MW. Since then, Elenger has developed several dozen solar parks across Estonia, as well as two solar power plants in Latvia—in Nīca and Olaine.
