Elenger continues to develop green energy infrastructure in Latvia with €2 million investment in new battery storage facility in Liepāja

Elenger, the largest privately owned energy company in the Baltic and Finnish region, has invested €2 million in the development of a new battery energy storage system (BESS) in Liepāja. The new battery storage facility is already operational, significantly expanding Elenger’s green electricity storage portfolio and making an important contribution to strengthening the flexibility and stability of Latvia’s energy system.

“We are consistently developing energy storage solutions in Latvia because we see them as an integral part of a modern energy system. Last year, we commissioned a €2 million BESS at our solar park in Nīca. The new project in Liepāja is the next logical step in our development strategy, enabling us to integrate renewable energy into the market more efficiently, reduce price volatility and strengthen energy security. It is an investment both in a sustainable future and in the interests of our customers,” says Gints Brakovskis, Managing Director of Elenger Latvia.

The Liepāja BESS has a power capacity of 4.5 megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of 9 megawatt-hours (MWh). With this storage capacity, the system can supply electricity to approximately 1,100 households for one day. The battery system operates in conjunction with Elenger’s solar power plant, enabling more efficient use of the electricity it generates and helping to ensure a more stable power supply during periods of peak electricity demand.

“These figures clearly demonstrate the importance of energy storage technologies in today’s power system. Storage is a key prerequisite for developing a flexible energy system, as it enables more efficient integration of renewable energy and supports market stability. Storage technologies allow electricity to be stored when generation exceeds consumption and used during periods of higher demand or higher prices. This helps stabilise the market, reduce price volatility and provide customers with more competitive and predictable tariffs. At the same time, battery storage systems strengthen Latvia’s energy security, reduce the risk of power supply disruptions and increase the share of locally generated renewable energy in the country’s overall energy mix,” emphasises Gints Brakovskis.

Elenger opened its first solar power plant in Latvia, located in Nīca, in 2024. The solar park, comprising nearly 7,000 solar panels, generates 4.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually, and last year the company connected its first BESS to the facility.

The Elenger Group began producing solar energy in 2019, when, together with a partner company, it opened what was then the largest solar park complex in Estonia, located in Pärnu. The facility comprises 13,000 solar panels with a total capacity of 4.7 MW. Since then, Elenger has developed several dozen solar parks across Estonia, as well as the solar power plant in Nīca, Latvia.

Elenger has also begun construction of a BESS at its Tallinn solar park, with a planned storage capacity of 18 MWh.

Elenger is the largest private energy company in the Baltic States and Finland, with operations covering the entire energy value chain, from trading and production to delivery to end customers. The company serves more than 450,000 customers and employs more than 1,000 people.

Elenger supplies its customers with Western-origin natural gas and renewable biomethane and operates gas distribution networks in Estonia, Latvia and Poland, with a combined length of 9,000 kilometres. The company also sells electricity, including green electricity generated at its solar parks, and is actively engaged in international energy trading.

Elenger is owned by investment company Infortar, whose shares are listed on the Main List of the Nasdaq Tallinn Stock Exchange.
